Random Walk Map Series

Posted in 02: The Random Walk Project with tags , , , , , on October 11, 2009 by Chris

This is the near culmination of the most recent project I’ve been working on. These are maps showing various locations that I end up based on generating random, or chance based results such as flipping a coin, or spinning a wheel to lead me in the direction that I go. Each map uses a different method, and each has five separate paths on it.

Map 1: Brooklyn

Final Map BK

Using the chance wheel, the choice of forward, backward, left or right is made at every intersection 100 times each.

——-

Map 2: United States

Final map US

By flipping a coin, the choice of northwest or southwest is made roughly every 50 miles 100 times each.

——-

Map 3: World

Final Map WD

Using the chance wheel, the choice of which direction to move—in degrees— is made roughly every 500 miles 100 times each.

You may have noticed that this site has a new domain:

obscureassociate.com

Why obscure associate? Well, keeping with the chance based theme of this site, I used a random word generator to make the decision for me.

Plotting Chance

I’m using Google earth to plot out my paths for the Random Walk Mapping Project. I’m plotting the results from the random number booklets on different maps to show where I would end up.

Here’s a little teaser….

Future Poster

In 2036, reality entertainment has reached its pinnacle moment. Pushed into unknown markets, a new idea has developed: Death Lottery. People play for a chance to die—streaming live on the internets. The media coverage will be sure to make them a star, but is it worth it?

Future Poster

Taking inspiration from 20th century sporting event posters, this tongue-in-cheek message was intended to inform a viewer in the future about an aspect of my topic (chance).  In this case lottery and chance based games—taken to extremes.  As instructed, this poster was made using only this copy of The Hockey News.

Weird huh?

Spinning Wheel

I designed and built this wheel to aid myself in the process of generating chance. It is multifuncional; giving results for;

+/- (or heads/tails); up/down/left/right; and 360 degrees (in increments of ten).

Random Number Booklets

Posted in 02: The Random Walk Project with tags , , , , , on October 1, 2009 by Chris

Over the next fifteen days, I will be generating random numbers for a project I am working on. These booklets will help me keep track of the daily records.

Their are three booklets. The first is a two way choice, Heads or Tails. The second is a four way choice; Up, Down, Left, and Right. The third is used for 360 degree choices.
