type variations

I’ve looked at some new typefaces for the logo. I want to stick with the star as is, so  im trying to find something that really works well with it. I looked at about 20, and narrowed it down to these.

Most of these are geometric based, gothic style typefaces, to communicate the laboratory feel, as well as the precision and craft of these devises that are all about geometry. Some of these take a different route, conveying the oiuja/ mystic side of the organization.

  1. i like no. 4 and 5. i think no. 5 has potential, the typeface has got a lot of angles, and it kind of works well with the logo (even with the ones you didn’t pick). but personally i like no. 4 the most.

  2. I vote for no.5. the angles of the typeface are very geometric and fits with the logo yet doesn’t fight with the logo. when i looked at it, first i saw the star then the typeface and it felt like a harmony.

  3. for me it all has to do with how you use the logo. i would start designing packages, thins and see how the logo lives. then make the call down the road. hold off on commiting to expensive production if you can for the moment and design things that you produce.

i like 5 too. but perhaps a custom font is in order? hmmm?

  4. I vote for 5 too, it’s subtly angular, and I think that works well with the 8-pointed star form you’ve created. As Paul said, I think seeing how the logo lives in things you start to design makes sense and I LOVE the idea of creating something custom!!!

Just a note on your patterns you posted- I really think 1, 2, & 4 are working, but 3 doesn’t seem to be fitting in with the others. And about your dice- that 50-sided die is AMAZING!

  5. I know everyone said that you should change it, but I really like 1. I think it fits your project and the aesthetic so much more than any of the other ones. For me the others don’t contrast the logo as well.

I agree 100% with holding off until you design some other things. I would have to say the first one still feels best, though with tighter spacing. When I see gridnik, I don’t really think about why it’s there, I just think “GRIDNIK.” It’s like its own brand, it’s too distinctive or something. Maybe that’s only me. Probably is.

Anyway, sounds like your fate is pretty much already sealed with designing a typeface. Good luck :)

  7. i don’t think the gridnik-y ones are working so well. i like the ones that look more vintage, 1, 4, 5… i think because the star is SO geometric, having some original type would be really awesome. something more mystical perhaps?

  8. Thanks everyone.

My favorites were pretty much all of the ones mentioned, actually. 1, 4 and 5. I also think that 1 (the original) still works well and seems appropriate, but i’m also leaning toward 4 and 5 a whole lot (4 mostly). I think it will really work well for packaging, and I just remembered that I used the same typeface on my first wheel… because the numbers worked great. And jarrod I TOTALLY agree with you about gridnik! I made myself go there because it seemed like the most appropriate possible time for that typeface (laboratory, geometric shapes and angles) but it really does speak loudly and seem dated (already)… If I did make a typeface (grits my teeth) it would probably have those qualities, using the angles found in the eight pointed star.
