electrical wiring

Posted in 03: Decision Laboratory on February 9, 2010 by Chris

Today I bought a 5000 rpm fan motor, a battery and an on/off switch. Now to learn some basic electrical wiring…this thing may be a little too powerful, I might have to get a motor with lower rpms. I’m worried the wheel will come off and decapitate someone.

If all goes well, I should have this thing working by monday, if not sooner.

I-Ching Book

Posted in 03: Decision Laboratory with tags , on February 8, 2010 by Chris

Here is a draft of How the IChing book would look. Its a 5×8 book, with a brief intro that would explain what it is, as well as how to use the book with the dice (you use two eight sided dice to recieve a hexagram, of which there are 64 possibilities).

The symbol on the left page is a hexagram,  that represents the text on the right. What I am doing is essentially replacing this symbol as what you would draw with the dice, so I cant decide if it should remain in the page with the dice, or just the dice, etc…

D-0108 v.1.0

Here is a drawing for what I’m imagining for the inside of the box. The top drawing would be the inside lid, the lower the inside bottom (where the magic happens). The ouside of the box will only have the star symbol, to keep it a little mysterious while closed.

I’m sticking with Futura for the informational text (and I don’t think i’m budging on that), and trying out a new font for the product name/ descriptions. Im actually really liking it with the two as they are right now.

The name is really just a placeholder right now, I’m not sure what to call it. Any ideas? Also, take a look at the language, and please suggest changes if you have any, or tell me what works.

I just got back from Canal Plastics, getting the bottom plate laser cut for the wheel. Very exciting.

wheel placards

Posted in 03: Decision Laboratory with tags , , , , on February 6, 2010 by Chris

1. 01-50 number generator

2. 15 answers to a question. 5 yes/  5 no/ 5 maybe. Based on the magic 8 ball, but with different answers. Another difference is that the magic 8 ball has 10 yes/ 5 no/ 5 maybe (which seems unfair to me)

3. in progress/unknown 16 option

To unify them all I plan to only use black and white as color, and only three line weights; circles, squares, and the angles found in the eight pointed star.

type variations

Posted in 03: Decision Laboratory on February 5, 2010 by Chris

I’ve looked at some new typefaces for the logo. I want to stick with the star as is, so  im trying to find something that really works well with it. I looked at about 20, and narrowed it down to these.

Most of these are geometric based, gothic style typefaces, to communicate the laboratory feel, as well as the precision and craft of these devises that are all about geometry. Some of these take a different route, conveying the oiuja/ mystic side of the organization.

Research Day/ Dice

Posted in 03: Decision Laboratory with tags , , , , , on February 4, 2010 by Chris

Today I went to Chinatown (where all of the best building/ specialty supply stores are) and did lots of research on my wheel. I went to a motor store, and learned a bit about electronics and motors. I’m looking into getting a 12V 5000 rpm DC motor to run the RG-0108 (naming system i’m considering for the products—in this case meaning Random Generator/one wheel/ eight inch diameter). I also went to military surplus stores, art stores, canal plastics, and lighting stores looking for ideas and trying to find parts. Between this and all of my internet research, I have a better grasp on what will work and what wont, and now im going to get to work. I think im going to abandon the aluminum case idea for a nice wooden case, they just dont seem to be accessible in a way that will work for me.

Ive got the logistics of the mechanical building I need to do 75% figured out; I still have a lot of design work to do. Thats my next step. I picked up a circular protractor for designing wheel placards by hand, and Im going to jump right into some logo/ type work.

Also, my dice are in.

Steampunk

Posted in 03: Decision Laboratory with tags on February 3, 2010 by Chris

I just stumbled across this odd sub-culture/ art and design style .

Is anyone else aware of this?

I see my prototypes having some of this steampunk aesthetic. Im actually suprised how relevant it seems.
